What did we learn to be prepared for that
Before we are going on a journey into a new area, an unknown territory,
we need to do some preparations. It´s necessary to know, what is the destination of our trip, which transport variant we are chosing, what are the weather conditions, how many persons are coming with us and about how long will this journey be like.
Exploring new and unknown territory has always been a special desire of us humans. We like to evaluate our bounderies and we like to expand our fields. Looking back into our history of technical achievements during the 19th century, we were very much creative as well as innovative.
If we take a closer look at the achievements in the field of the computer and information technology, we made a tremendous development. We were very much convinced that most of these technologies will improve our lifes and provide us more prosperity and more freedom and more time “for the more important things in life”.
Among other things, we created the personal computer, the email system, the mobile phone, the tv, the internet. We created these systems with the best intensions. But where are we today? Did we really improve our lifes? Did these achievements really bring us more prosperity? Did we gain really more freedom? And did we really win more time?
Does the reality today not look more like we do not control what we built, it´s more like the technology we have built is controling us?
The current developments of technology in the areas of machine learning, artificial intelligence AI and robotics are proceeding in such a speed, that it is really surprising to see, how much we are capabel to achieve, if we really want something. If we would be so passionate in other areas of our lifes, we could truly improve the wellfare of us all on this wonderful given planet. We are deeply convinced, if we would put so much efforts for targets like improving each one of us for himself and therefore following the whole human mankind, we would definitely be able to do that and we would build a new and highly improved version of mankind living in harmony with all the other life forms on this planet.
Up until now, we have so far created many movies with scenarios about us living with AI and robots. In most of these scenarios we underlined the importance of the integration of some very elementary protocols or laws.
In the movie i, robot we are speaking about the 3 laws of robotics:
- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law
In the movie Automata we are speaking about two protocols:
- a robot cannot harm any form of life
- a robot cannot alter itself or others
(A setup that is almost identical to legendary sci-fi author Isaac Asimov’s “Three Laws of Robotics” (Ibàñez unabashedly cites Asimov as a major source of inspiration)).
Following many discussions about AI and robotics, we are missing the central focus on the most important part like the above mentioned laws or protocols. It feels like we are ignoring them by purpose. Instead we are celebrating the results of letting two AI working together to improve themselves without any human interaction needed.
What we can clearly notice from mostly all of the discussions is, that we all agree, that AI and robots will not help us to become a better human mankind.
We believe, that this can only be achieved by us humans.
