The race of the 3

The race of the 3 – between AI researchers, the producing companies for robotics and the wisdom of the humans

We are very much worried about the two different ways of handling the topic of AI and Robotics. The researchers for AI are having the approach to fundamentally think over this topic carefully. They also identified AI as an existential threat, to which we fully agree. While the researchers for Robotics cannot wait to produce a full environment like the Henn-na hotel in Japan, which is running fully by robots. Despite all critical thinking about the software which is running an every robot, their main approach is to produce robots and make them fully operating and fully functional the sooner the better.

The AI researchers

In the meantime, the researchers for AI are coming together and building community platforms such as https://futureoflife.org, https://intelligence.org or the https://openai.com. In these companies are famous people involved to give the topic and the organisations the necessary importance – people like Stephen Hawkings, Elon Musk, Max Tegmark and many competent people more. Max Tegmark is clearly pointing out the basic problem in the research about AI, that we are putting a lot of effort into the research of the AI technology, while we do not put as nearly as the same amount of effort into the development of the so-called “wisdom” about AI. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand, that this unbalanced force of energy we are demonstrating is clearly moving us into the situation that we are creating something we can not control or understand and which is way more powerful than any human, and will, therefore, put us into the dust.

The robotics researchers

The researchers for Robotics seem not to think about the consequences of their products at all. Their main goal is simply to make it happen better yesterday than tomorrow. Robots have to be up and running, no matter how you are doing it, it has to be working properly. It is quite impressive to see the videos about robots on the internet. There are already very much advanced robots to see from Boston Dynamics (http://www.bostondynamics.com) – “Organisations worldwide, from DARPA, the US Army, Navy and Marine Corps to Sony Corporation turn to Boston Dynamics for advice and for help creating the most advanced robots on Earth.” The mentioned corporations are having big financial resources for these projects. But other than the AI researchers, their main purpose for using the robots, are not for the benefit of human mankind.

The 3rd party of the race – the wisdom of the humans

At this point, we would love to say something positive and delightful about the wisdom of us humans. But unfortunately, there is not very much positive to say about that. If we take a look at the situation we have been creating in the world, we don’t get a good testimony at all. In our understanding, we humans as a species have failed in all categories so far, most of all and before everything, we never learned from our own mistakes.

To give you one example of how much we actually failed, we would like to listen to Max Tegmark about how we are handling nuclear power:

Max Tegmark – Let’s talk about our nuclear weapons

So, in order to give us a grade for our “wisdom of the humans”, we have to give us a D-

The current situation in the race of the 3

The AI researchers are pointing out, that any artificial intelligence has to be aligned with our human values. What are our human values? If you search in Wikipedia for “the value of life”, you will come to a very economic view of that: The value of life is an economic value used to quantify the benefit of avoiding a fatality.

If you are looking for some more personal values, you also might find in Wikipedia the following:
Personal values provide an internal reference for what is good, beneficial, important, useful, beautiful, desirable and constructive. Values generate behaviour and influence the choices made by an individual.

Values may help solve common human problems for survival by comparative rankings of value, the results of which provide answers to questions of why people do what they do and in what order they choose to do them.[clarification needed] Moral, religious, and personal values, when held rigidly, may also give rise to conflicts that result from a clash between differing world views.

Over time the public expression of personal values that groups of people find important in their day-to-day lives, lay the foundations of law, custom and tradition. Recent research has thereby stressed the implicit nature of value communication.

What we like to highlight in this text is the hint [clarification needed].

How about these values:

Most basic universal human values

Life itself a Common individual value, most basic universal core value.

Happiness Common individual value, most basic universal core value.

Love Common individual value and social value, most basic universal core value.

Peace Common individual and social value, circumstantial value.

Freedom Common individual and social value, circumstantial value.

Safety Common individual and social value, circumstantial value.

Intelligence Common individual and social value, a virtual value.

Respect the Social value of the moral standard of respect.

Equality Social value of the moral standard of equality.

Justice Social value of the moral standard of justice.

Nature Common value, physical value.

Human health Common individual value, physical and mental value.

Most basic universal social standards

Respect prevents the respectless, antisocial, hostile and criminal behaviour.

Reliability prevents misuse of trust and faith and respectlessness.

Equality prevents arrogance and respectlessness and is needed for justice.

Justice prevents egocentric, respectless and hostile behaviour or decisions.

Peace prevents respectlessness, conflict, enmity and war.

Freedom prevents domination, respectlessness and oppression.

Safety prevents respectlessness and endangering of others.

Responsibility prevents endangering of others and inhibits antisocial behaviour.

Respect for nature prevents the destruction of nature and animal cruelty.

Constitution and rule of law are in general based on moral standards.

Most basic natural human virtues

Integrity needed to experience love and happiness and implies reliability and truth.

Human-friendliness implies respect, helpfulness, reliability and creates peace.

Empathy causes helpfulness, sharing and respect, and needed to experience love.

Loyalty implies respect, helpfulness, empathy and sharing.

Justice implies reliability, empathy and respect.

Modesty avoids or diminishes egocentrism, arrogance and greed.

Respect for nature saves nature from human misuse, pollution and destruction

Responsibility-awareness avoids the respectless behaviour.

Realism needed for responsible decisions and veracity.

Humane idealism needed for solidarity and unity of peoples in the world.

Positive creativity for prosperity and realisation of universal human values.

Intelligence needed for understanding, human health, environment and prosperity.

How often do you see these topics being taught at school? Never? Why not?
Is there any other value than the above-mentioned ones that we are following more?
If so, which one is it?

Summary

As long as we are not following values like the listed ones, but they should be the basic line of our all life here on earth, we can simply not expect that any machine, any artificial intelligence or any robot will ever follow these values.

They will be always misaligned with our values because we have no natural values that we are following. We are following only economical values.
